A quick guide to identifying the source of vibration, grinding or thumping before it becomes a bigger repair.
A washing machine that suddenly sounds different is telling you something. Catching the cause early usually means a small repair instead of a drum, bearing or motor replacement.
Modern front-loaders are engineered to be almost silent when everything is healthy. Any new noise — even a subtle one — has a mechanical explanation. This guide walks through the common sounds we diagnose every week, in the order of how urgent they are.
Loud thumping during spin
Almost always caused by an unbalanced load — a single heavy item like a duvet swinging to one side. If it persists after redistributing the load, the shock absorbers or suspension springs are wearing out and should be replaced before they damage the drum.
A quick self-check: with the machine empty and unplugged, push down firmly on the front edge of the drum opening. It should sink about 2–3 cm and bounce back once. If it bounces two or three times, the shock absorbers are worn.
Grinding or metal-on-metal sound
A grinding noise, especially at high spin, usually points to failing drum bearings. Do not delay: running the machine with worn bearings will damage the drum shaft and turn a small repair into a full assembly swap.
Bearing failure is one of the few repairs where continuing to use the machine actively makes the fault more expensive. The moment you hear metal-on-metal at spin, stop using the machine on spin cycles until it is inspected.
High-pitched squeal
Typically a slipping or worn drive belt. It is a cheap and quick fix if caught early. Left alone, the belt will snap and often takes the pulley with it.
Rattling during drain
Coins, hairpins, keys or a stray sock end up in the drain pump filter. Most machines have a small access panel at the front-bottom — clean the filter every couple of months.

Before opening the filter cap, place a shallow tray and a towel under it — there is always residual water. If the filter is clean and the noise persists, a broken impeller inside the pump is the next suspect and needs replacement.
Loud humming with no spin
The motor is trying to spin but something is stopping it — a jammed pump, a seized bearing or a control-board fault. Switch the machine off and book a diagnostic; continuing to run it will burn the motor windings.
Vibration that shakes the whole floor
Two suspects: transport bolts still fitted (common after a recent move) or unlevel feet. Every washing machine ships with 3–4 red or yellow bolts at the back that MUST be removed before use. If they are already out, level the machine by adjusting the front feet until it does not rock at any corner.
Clicks and beeps mid-cycle
If a machine clicks and stops with an error code, note the code before power-cycling. Many boards clear the fault memory on reset, which makes diagnosis harder. A photo of the code speeds up our first visit and often means we arrive with the right part.
When to book a diagnostic
Any grinding, humming without spin, burning smell, water leaking under the machine, or repeated error codes deserves a technician. Small noises — occasional clicks, brief hums as valves open — are normal and not worth worrying about.
