Kettles, dishwashers, ice makers and coffee machines all suffer from scale. Here is how to slow it down.
Dubai's water is hard. Not by choice — it is a natural result of the source water and the desalination process. That mineral content ends up as limescale inside every appliance that heats water: kettles, dishwashers, washing machines, coffee machines, ice makers and water heaters.
Left unchecked, scale is the single biggest reason water-heating appliances fail early in the UAE. The mineral coating insulates heating elements, blocks narrow channels, and stresses pressure sensors — every one of those failures is preventable with a simple descaling routine.
Why scale matters
A one-millimetre coating of scale on a heating element cuts efficiency by roughly 10%. Two millimetres and the element runs so hot it starts to fail. In dishwashers and washing machines, scale also clogs spray arms, valves and pressure sensors — the source of most 'won't heat' and 'error code' calls we attend.
Signs scale is already a problem
- Glasses come out of the dishwasher cloudy and stay cloudy after towel drying.
- Kettle takes noticeably longer to boil than a year ago.
- Water heater trips its safety cut-out mid-shower.
- White flakes appear in the ice from your ice maker or fridge dispenser.
- Coffee machine flow rate drops and shot times drift longer.
What you can do at home
- Descale kettles and coffee machines monthly with a citric-acid solution.
- Run a dishwasher and washing machine maintenance cycle with a descaler every 4–6 weeks.
- Fit an inline filter or softener at the water heater inlet — it pays for itself.
- Wipe visible scale off shower heads and tap aerators regularly to spot changes early.

Choosing a descaler
For food-contact appliances (kettles, coffee machines, ice makers) use food-grade citric acid or a manufacturer-approved descaler — never vinegar in modern espresso machines, which damages seals. For dishwashers and washing machines, commercial descaler tablets are safer than DIY mixes because they include corrosion inhibitors that protect metal drums and heating elements.
Whole-home vs point-of-use softening
A full-home softener is the most effective long-term fix but requires plumbing changes and regular salt refills. A cheaper first step for most apartments is a point-of-use filter on the kitchen supply and a scale inhibitor cartridge at the water heater. Even these partial measures typically double appliance service life.
When to call a technician
If you already see white deposits inside the dishwasher, weak spray, glasses coming out cloudy, or the washing machine no longer heats properly, DIY descaling is often not enough. A full flush of the heater, valves and pressure switch will restore performance and buy back years of appliance life.
