Strange smells from your fridge — causes and lasting fixes

Persistent fridge odours are almost always fixable at home. Here is how to trace and eliminate the source.

A fresh-smelling fridge is a sign of a healthy fridge. Persistent odour means either something inside has gone off, or the fridge itself is not managing moisture properly.

Start with a full empty-and-clean

Remove every item. Wipe shelves, drawers and door bins with a warm solution of baking soda and water. Do not use bleach — it damages plastic and residues leach into food.

Clear the drain hole

The small hole at the back of the fridge compartment drains condensate. When blocked, water pools and turns stagnant. Clear it gently with a cotton bud.

Check the door gasket

Mould loves the folds of a warm gasket. Wipe with warm soapy water; if mould has embedded, replacement is the cleanest fix.

Use an odour absorber

A small bowl of baking soda or activated charcoal at the back of the fridge absorbs residual smells within 24–48 hours.

Common hidden sources

  • Spills inside door bin channels that never get wiped.
  • A single forgotten leaking bag in the vegetable drawer.
  • Warm-drink bottles stored on their side that seep condensation.
  • The drip tray at the back of the fridge (underneath, near the compressor).
  • A dead insect or rodent behind the appliance — rare, but worth ruling out in villas.

Prevention that actually works

Keep an open box of baking soda in the fridge and replace it every three months. Store strong-smelling foods (raw fish, certain cheeses, cut onion) in sealed glass or heavy-duty ziplock — plastic wrap alone does not stop odour transfer. Wipe spills the moment they happen, not the next day.

When the smell returns quickly

If smells return within days despite cleaning, the evaporator fan or drip tray is likely contaminated. Both require partial disassembly and are best handled by a technician.
