Before booking a repair, run through this short checklist — half the time you'll fix it in ten minutes.
A dishwasher that leaves food residue, cloudy glasses or gritty plates rarely needs a technician on the first call. Work through these five checks first — one of them fixes most cases.
The habits that keep dishwashers running well are simple, but almost nobody is taught them. Manufacturers assume you will read the manual; in reality nobody does, and small maintenance omissions build up into what feels like a major fault.
1. Clean the filter
The filter at the base of the tub traps food debris. If it has not been cleaned in the last month, that is very likely your problem. Rinse it under a tap and scrub with a soft brush.
2. Check the spray arms
Small holes in the spray arms clog with limescale and food. Remove the arms — they usually twist off — and clear each hole with a toothpick. Spin them by hand; they should turn freely.
3. Use the right detergent and rinse aid
Dubai's water needs rinse aid and, ideally, dishwasher salt. Skipping either causes cloudy glasses, water spots and poor drying. Refill both compartments and check the settings.
3-in-1 tablets are convenient but often skip enough salt for Dubai water. If your glasses are cloudy despite tablets, add loose salt to the softener reservoir and set the hardness setting on the machine to its highest level.
4. Load the machine correctly

Water needs to reach every surface. Do not overload, keep tall items to the sides, face dirty surfaces toward the spray arms, and never block the detergent door.
5. Run a hot maintenance cycle
Run an empty hot cycle with a commercial dishwasher cleaner once a month. It removes grease film and limescale buildup you cannot see.
Common misdiagnoses
- 'The heater is broken' — usually rinse aid empty or wrong cycle selected.
- 'The pump is weak' — nine times out of ten a blocked filter or spray arm.
- 'It smells' — trapped food in the filter or drain hose, not a fault.
- 'It leaks' — often overfoaming from hand-wash detergent used by accident.
Pre-rinse or not?
Do not rinse plates before loading. Modern dishwasher detergents need food particles to bind to. Scrape solids into the bin, then load. Pre-rinsing is one of the most common causes of poor cleaning results because the enzymes have nothing to act on.
Still not cleaning after all five? The heating element, circulation pump or inlet valve is the next suspect — that is where we come in.
