Half of 'AC not cooling' calls are solved in ten minutes. Work through this list before booking a technician.
Before you book a service, work through these six checks. Half the calls we take for 'AC not cooling' turn out to be one of these — and you can fix them in minutes.
1. Set point and mode
Confirm the remote is on Cool (not Fan or Dry) and the set temperature is at least 5°C below the room temperature.
2. Filter
A clogged filter kills airflow. Slide it out, rinse under a tap, dry and refit.
3. Outdoor unit airflow
Check the outdoor condenser is not blocked by laundry, plants or debris. It needs at least half a metre of clear space on every side.
4. Breakers
Reset the AC breaker at the DB board. A tripped condenser breaker is a common cause of the indoor unit blowing warm air.
5. Drain line

A blocked drain triggers a safety cut-out on many modern units. If you see water dripping indoors, the drain is the first suspect.
6. Age of last service
If it has been more than six months since a full service, gas pressure and coil cleanliness are almost certainly part of the problem.
What we look for on a professional diagnostic
- Suction and discharge gas pressures under load.
- Compressor current draw compared to the nameplate.
- Superheat and subcooling across the coil.
- Capacitor microfarad reading — capacitors weaken silently for months before failing.
- PCB fault codes and sensor resistance checks.
The one thing not to do
Do not keep power-cycling an AC that will not cool. If a compressor is struggling to start, repeated start attempts can burn the winding or the start capacitor. If the unit blows warm for more than 30 minutes after the checklist above, turn it off and book a diagnostic.
Still warm after all six? Book a diagnostic — the next likely causes (gas leak, capacitor, PCB, compressor) all need instruments and trained hands.
